Areas of expertise

Six domains, drawn from a 30+ paper publication record.

Grouped by research theme, leadership activity and scientific contribution across the publication record — not by any single pathogen. Select a domain to see the areas it covers and the publications behind it.

Global biospecimen acquisition and governance Specimen-sharing frameworks Outbreak sample collection strategies Biobanking for epidemic preparedness Survivor cohort sample access

One of the strongest specialisations in the record: enabling equitable access to clinical specimens, establishing specimen-sharing frameworks, and strengthening outbreak preparedness through strategic biospecimen networks.

WHO International Standards Antibody reference materials Biological standardisation Vaccine assay harmonisation Regulatory science

Recognised expertise in coordinating international collaborative studies and developing biological reference materials used to standardise vaccine and diagnostic measurements globally.

  • Availability and use of standards in vaccine development — npj Vaccines, 2023
  • First WHO International Standard for anti-Nipah virus antibody, 2023.
  • WHO International Standard for CCHFV antibodies, 2023.
  • WHO International Standard for Marburg virus antibodies, 2023.
  • WHO International Standard for Sudan virus antibodies, 2023.
  • WHO International Standard for SARS-CoV-1 antibodies, 2022.
Epidemic preparedness High-priority pathogens CEPI priority disease programmes Research and development roadmaps Public health emergency response

Strategic leadership in preparedness for emerging pathogens, including Nipah virus, Zika virus, filoviruses and other epidemic threats.

Vaccine development Immune correlates of protection Antibody and cellular immunity Immunological memory Vaccine evaluation

Substantial expertise in vaccine research, immune monitoring, long-term immune memory and immunological evaluation for emerging infectious diseases.

  • Rapid application of the molecular clamp platform for SARS-CoV-2, 2020.
  • Preclinical development of a molecular clamp-stabilised subunit vaccine for SARS-CoV-2 — Clinical & Translational Immunology, 2021.
  • Safety and immunogenicity of an MF59-adjuvanted spike glycoprotein-clamp vaccine for SARS-CoV-2 — The Lancet Infectious Diseases, 2021
  • Malaysia outbreak survivors retain detectable Nipah antibodies and memory B cells after 25 years, 2025.
  • Persistent T cell immunity following Nipah virus infection, 2026.
Clinical cohort studies Disease severity markers Pathogenesis research Host-pathogen interactions Translational infectious disease research

Translating outbreak observations into clinically relevant evidence, particularly for mpox, COVID-19 and other emerging viral diseases.

Global health policy Neglected tropical diseases Community engagement Survivor studies Health equity

Combines biomedical research with a strong focus on patient outcomes, survivor experiences, health equity and neglected diseases affecting vulnerable populations.

Equity by design

Samples travel north faster than capability travels south.

The default architecture of outbreak research still moves biological material and data out of affected countries and returns publications, not capacity. Equity-by-design means writing the counter-defaults into the protocol at the start: who runs the assay, who is named on the paper, who holds the reference material, and what the community gets when the emergency ends.

It is not a values statement. It is a preparedness argument. The next epidemic will be detected by a laboratory that either has the standards, the reagents and the trained staff — or does not.
